Counseling
In a world where we are consistently pressured to follow society's norms, it can be difficult to truly explore and embrace our own identities, especially when we may not “fit” into society's boxes. These experiences can leave us feeling confused, hurt, and disconnected. At Affirming Approach, we aim to offer a welcoming and affirming space for you to process some of this weight. We work with you to explore those transitions of self, helping you appreciate and value the lifelong journey of becoming you.

Finding a therapist is a deeply personal journey and it can be stressful and traumatizing to explain the very core of who you are to someone who may not “get it.” I aim to understand your perspective and embrace all aspects of you in a non-judgmental space. I recognize that every individual brings their own perception of their needs and the world around them, so I place substantial focus on identity, culture, and environment. I also believe that therapy is a great way to continue the conversation with ourselves and transition to a space where we are able to lovingly embrace all aspects of our lives. Together we will celebrate your resilience, explore your growing edges, and work to mend the wounds of the past.
I primarily work with individuals who identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community and are struggling with identity, self-acceptance, and/or acceptance within their environment. I also work with individuals living with HIV to help them thrive while managing this chronic disease. Additional areas of focus include navigating end of life experiences, grief and loss, anxiety, and trauma. My approach is built upon compassion, respect, and collaboration. I employ strengths and empowerment perspectives, which are cornerstones of the social work profession, and utilize mindfulness practices, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and other evidence-based practices to support your growth.
In 2012, I graduated from the University of South Carolina’s Master of Social Work program. I have worked in the fields of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Case Management, Homelessness, and Substance Use Disorder Treatment for more than fifteen years. I have also taught for the University of South Carolina’s MSW program for more than eight years and conducted trainings on substance misuse, diversity and inclusion, and other clinical practices for numerous entities throughout South Carolina. I live in the Columbia area with my partner of eleven years and our two four-legged children, Skittles and Velveeta. In our free time, we love to travel, spend time outdoors, and enjoy time with friends and family.
